Your sex drive is in park, and the last thing on your mind is physical intimacy with your partner. This lack of sexual desire can be misinterpreted as lack of interest in your relationship.

So, think about it... As a woman, have you been feeling less receptive to sex? Have you noticed feeling less sensual, or that your sex drive has diminished? If so, you’re not alone. This is a major complaint of many women experiencing Hormone Imbalance, which directly affects your libido.

It’s common knowledge that Testosterone plays a significant role in both men and women when it comes to a healthy libido. But one of the more common deficiencies in women is Estrogen, which plays as much a role in a woman’s sex life as Testosterone.

In my practice, I have seen women with optimal levels of both hormones who still suffer with a low sex drive. Hormones are much more complicated than just pinpointing one symptom to one hormone.

If you suspect low libido is affecting your quality of life, you do have a way to find out if your hormones are out of balance. In my practice, I offer a very simple and extremely accurate saliva test which, when analyzed by the lab, produces a clear picture of what’s going on inside your body. If a problem is identified, I then work with my clients on an individual basis to balance their system, not with drugs, but naturally. Sometimes adjustments are as simple as slight changes in diet. Other times, it’s a little more involved. Either way, the end result can be life changing.

Many separations and divorces happen when women reach mid-40’s to mid-50’s. I often wonder how many of these troubled relationships could have been prevented if women had their hormones checked. If what I described sounds familiar, please know that I’m here to help!

Karen's website is www.nutritionalchoice.net.

Nad Yoga & The Art of Listening

by Acharya Sri Khadi Madama, RYT, of TheHolisticOption.com

In Yoga, seekers of enlightenment practice the art of listening very deeply to the inner sounds that vibrate along the Nadis, or subtle nerve channels. It is said that these sounds are generated from the energy chambers deep in the subtle anatomy. Imagine if you could learn to listen so intently that you could zero in on a single sound and understand its quality and so comprehend the deeper meaning of life. Imagine that ability incorporated into your day to day work relationships where you are able to listen so intently that you hear what the other person is trying to say, but not able to convey. Learning to listen on this deep level is said to be listening with the heart. When you practice being able to listen one-pointedly hearing what others cannot hear, you perceive higher vibrational intentions that are thought yet not necessarily spoken. You are then able to respond from that same inwardly attuned space and true communication can take place, You have moved yourself forward leaps and bounds not only in your spiritual practice but on the job as well. Such an ability enhances your performance and helps to keep you keen to what's truly going on around you.

When you have time, cover your ears, including pressing on the ear flaps and imagine that you are journeying down into your inner ear. Listen for sounds that you know are not being generated by outside noise. Let your breath settle down so you are really quiet. Make a note of the sounds which may sound like water running through pipes, a kind of echo, and other far away sounds. The next day, try to really zero in on someone's voice so much that you are able to no longer hear any background noise. Now try to 'hear' what they are intending to tell you but that they may not be saying. You can practice this in your personal relationships so that you learn to 'hear' what someone is saying to you from their heart but having a hard time expressing. In time, your intuition, arising from a true ability to hear inwardly will pay off in ways you cannot yet imagine.

Yoga Works!

Khadi's website is www.yourstrulyyogatv.vpweb.com.

Projecting Success into Your Happy New Year

by Acharya Sri Khadi Madama, RYT, of TheHolisticOption.com

Entering into the first light of this new year, we can reflect on an ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana, in which Lord Ram, the last Raghu king of the Ikshavatu dynasty is banished to a deep wood for 14 years, along with his consort Sita and with his brother. Instead of complaining, the ever fore bearing warrior prince Ram looked at his fate and drew upon his wisdom. What would have been devastating to the average man became an adventure. What started with extreme obstacles and dreaded events became exciting challenges and eventual victories.

Begin this new year with the same attitude. Consider it a great new adventure. Don't complain, stay focused on the ultimate success of all that you endeavor. Armed with the golden arrows of determined intention, transform every possibility into assured success.

Trying to close that real estate deal, complete a project, get a raise or win that promotion? Try the following concentration and breathing technique to help accomplish your goal.

The Golden Arrow Concentration Technique for Success:

Pick up the file folder, documents or application of your objective, while taking a deep breath. Exhale the breath of success into the documents. Place them on the desk before you focusing all of your intention for success, while envisioning a golden arrow in your mind. Breathe in again, then concentrating with all of your force, exhale and let the arrow find it's mark, as it lands accurately and successfully. Silly idea? Not when you see the results that pin pointing your concentration brings.

Yoga Works!

Khadi's website is www.yourstrulyyogatv.vpweb.com.

Yoga at Work: Surviving Office Politics

by Acharya Sri Khadi Madama, RYT, of TheHolisticOption.com

In India there is a common image. It is of three monkeys. One with his hands over his eyes. One with his hands over his ears. And, one with his hands over his mouth. Mahatma Gandhi had a carving of this whimsical, yet instructive icon in his office, which I saw during my visit to Birla House in 1989. Because his office was very sparsely decorated, the three little monkeys really stood out! They, of course, are what we all know as the ancient adage " See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil". So often in India, simple images convey such deep spiritual messages. The mind, here, is portrayed as a monkey, which often goes about doing whatever it does without thinking of any consequences. In Yoga, this is referred to as the undisciplined mind which behaves like a monkey. In Yoga the principle of understanding the dynamic of the breath teaches us the intrinsic connection between breath and speech and therefore, breath, speech and hearing. Today with computers and TV, we see so much that is detrimental to our health, that we can add sight to the same dynamic. Yoga teaches us to think before we speak, to protect ourselves from unwarranted sights and sounds that are harmful to our well being. It stands, then, that we should guard against being the cause of such actions.

The office is a wonderful place to hone these skills, as we come into contact with other who are not so careful in their behaviors. It is easy to get pulled in by others conversations about co-workers, their complaints during our precious break and lunch times, and to involving us indirectly in their problems.

It is important to have a few friendly statements at the ready to fend off these events, so that you can stay in harmony with the Three Monkeys, thereby not causing yourself more stress. Keep those little monkeys in mind the next time you are tempted to say or do something that could start a problem in your own little peaceful productive corner of the world. Be the person who can never be accused of back-biting. Avoid allowing anything being told to you that later could pull you into a stressful situation. Truly, there are things to which you should NOT be privy. In this way, you can be a playful little monkey, scurrying happily through your work days.

Three Little Monkeys Stress Relief

1. Eyes: Rub your palms together until warm, then press over your eyes while taking a deep breath. Perform once per hour to relieve eye stress.

2. Ears: Cover your ears with your palms and try to listen inwardly. If you can step outside away from noise for just 2 minutes, your inner ear muscle will reset to protect your hearing.

3. Mouth: Relax that jaw. Gently press your thumbs into the middle of the joint where your jaw comes together and massage. Great for reducing problems with teeth grinding from stress.

4. Hands/Wrists: Monkey Paws: To relieve hand and wrist stress from typing or long commute drives, use your hands like a crane, trying to pick up a few objects by bringing all of your fingers together to grab. Or open and close your 'Monkey Paw' a few times. And since many women tend to have a high tolerance for mental and physical pain, some resign themselves to suffer through with symptoms like Cramps, Mood Swings, Acne and Fatigue as a monthly ordeal without thinking of the potentially greater health risks involved.

What many women don’t realize is that by leaving hormonal imbalance unchecked, they are potentially setting themselves up for health complications including Low Libido, Depression, Memory Problems, Anxiety, and Nervous Tension. Let’s take a closer look at potential complications caused by hormonal imbalance:

With inadequate levels of Estrogen, you may experience hot flashes, fatigue and insomnia. But low estrogen can lead to Osteoporosis and Heart Disease, which currently affects six million American women. Throw in low testosterone and you double your risk of Osteoporosis and Heart Disease. And if your progesterone levels are also low, add on high blood pressure, and risk of developing Endometrial Cancer.

Now if you have high testosterone levels you may experience increased Facial Hair, and Acne. You may be told that you have been displaying more Aggression or Hostility. High testosterone carries with it risks of Breast and Endometrial Cancer, and Blood Sugar Disorders.

There are many combinations of low and high levels of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone, and just as many health risks associated with these offset ratios.

But, how are you to know if your hormones are in balance. There is a very simple and accurate saliva test I offer to my clients, which, when analyzed by the lab, produces a clear picture of what’s going on. If a problem is identified, I then work with my clients on an individual basis to balance their system, not with drugs, but naturally. Sometimes adjustments are as simple as slight changes in diet. Other times, it’s a little more involved. Either way, the end result can be life changing.

Karen's website is www.nutritionalchoice.net.

No Bake Cranberry Relish

by Karen Roth, MS, NC, of TheHolisticOption.com

When planning a Thanksgiving dinner, many cooks focus on the turkey and stuffing, perhaps the vegetable and potatoes. But when it comes to the cranberry sauce they default to the simplicity of opening a can. What the cook may not realize is that preparing a unique and delicious cranberry relish can make the cook the talk of the dinner table.
This year, why not treat your dinner guests to a fresher, more scrumptious and healthy version of that same of cranberry sauce? After all, this is the peak of cranberry season!
"No Bake Cranberry Relish" is easy and quick to prepare, and gives you a fun new way to serve cranberries. It's crunchy and fresh, tangy taste will no doubt have everyone talking!

Cranberry Relish Ingredients:

12 oz fresh or frozen Cranberries
1 medium ORGANIC apple, chopped
1 ORGANIC medium pear, chopped
Half cup RAW honey
1 TBS horseradish

Directions:

Chop cranberries very fine. A food processor may be used
Chop the apple and pear into 1/2 inch cubes
Combine all ingredients and mix well
Serve

Recipe taken from The World's Healthiest Foods

Since pear and apples are heavily sprayed with pesticides, make sure and buy organic!
When choosing horseradish, choose pure horseradish made with only salt and/or vinegar as opposed to the commercial brands that contain harmful high fructose corn syrup. I like Gold’s brand found at Whole Foods.

Benefits:
Since this is a raw recipe, there is no damage to nutrients from heat or processing.

Cranberries:
Everyone knows that cranberries help prevent urinary tract infection, but they can also prevent kidney stone formation and they also promote gastrointestinal and heart health. Cranberries are also low in calories, 1/2 cup is on 23 calories, and they contain 5 times the antioxidants of broccoli. The phytonutrients found specifically in the cranberry can protect against macular degeneration and breast cancer. According to a study published in Cancer Letter, cranberry phytonutrients can cause cancer cells to kill themselves off and shut down their ability to multiply. And, if that isn’t enough to make you thrilled to be enjoying cranberries this Thanksgiving, you’ll be happy to know that drinking the juice, or eating the whole berry, benefits the heart because research has shown that the cranberry lowers LDL cholesterol while increasing the more beneficial HDL cholesterol.

Pear:
Packed full of antioxidants that prevent damage to cells, pears promote heart health.
Additionally, pears protect the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and lowers cholesterol. Pears are also a good source of fiber and they promote digestive health, which may come in handy after a big Thanksgiving meal! Oh, and pears are low in calories; one pear is 98 calories.

Apple:
Apples are also hearth healthy and contain two types of fiber; the insoluble fiber binds to LDL cholesterol and moves it out of the body while the soluble fiber lowers the production of LDL by the liver. Apples also contain potent antioxidants such as Quercetin and Vitamin C. These prevent free-radical damage that promotes heart disease.

Oh, and the two fibers in apples relieve constipation, which can also follow a really big Thanksgiving meal!

Raw Honey:
Loaded with amylases, enzymes that help us digest carbohydrates. Raw honey doesn’t upset blood sugar levels like table sugar does.

Horseradish:
When horseradish is cut it releases a strong chemical called allylisothiocyanate, which protects against food borne illness. It protects against Listeria, E. Coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. Horseradish is also a cholagogue, an agent that increases bile thereby promoting a healthy gallbladder and improving digestion. Increasing bile production also helps us digest fats and oils.

So, as you can see, by serving No Bake Cranberry Relish you are giving your Thanksgiving guests a holiday gift... the gift of health!

Karen's website is www.nutritionalchoice.net.

Menopause Symptoms Preventing Enjoyment of Life?

by Karen Roth, MS, NC, of TheHolisticOption.com

For anyone who has experienced depression, it’s not a fun place to be. The feelings of sadness and despair can hang over you even though you can’t pinpoint any specific reason for feeling so down. Although many of life’s circumstances can contribute to depression, it can sometimes be the result of hormone imbalance. Let’s take a look.

Inadequate levels of Estrogen can leave you feeling less outgoing and less positive. For some women the symptoms of estrogen imbalance are more severe and they become withdrawn, apathetic and even experiencing periods of hopelessness. This can be on-going or it can be an occasional occurrence which can be a sign of unusual fluctuation in hormone levels. Our hormones have a biological baseline and do fluctuate throughout the month, but at no time should that result in you feeling depressed.

Low Testosterone levels can lead to moodiness, a loss of confidence and low motivation, and in some women the feeling of being frightened or afraid. Even though testosterone is thought of as the male hormone, it is just as important for women to have appropriate levels to maintain a sense of wellbeing.

Progesterone is yet another important hormone that, when out of balance, can contribute to severe mood swings. You know the kind that comes out from nowhere!

If depression or mood swings are affecting your quality of life, you do have options. But, how are you to know if your hormones are out of balance and contributing to this condition? There is a very simple and accurate saliva test I offer to my clients, which, when analyzed by the lab, produces a clear picture of what’s going on. If a problem is identified, I then work with my clients on an individual basis to balance their system, not with drugs, but naturally. Sometimes adjustments are as simple as slight changes in diet. It is through becoming aware of how we use our bodies through body language that we can avert the ravages of speaking bad body language and to start speaking Yoga Body Language. The spine is the key to interpreting our health since all movement radiates from the spine and the spine contains all of the nerves that flow to our internal organs and nervous system. The more mobile the spine, the more energy and vibrant health in the body. The Yogi can achieve complete health in proportion to his awareness of how he moves from the spine. For those who sit for hours at work, the slumping forward with tilted spine and contracted muscles crimp the nerves and impede blood flow to the brain cutting off oxygen.

Let's start this week off right by beginning our Yoga Body Language with an erect spine which says, "I'm confident, successful and feel good about myself". This will create an air of success around you that people will be able to read and respond to favorably, as well.

Every half hour cue yourself to sit up straight and take a deep breath. Mentally talk that Yoga Body talk by telling yourself that you are successful, confident and attractive. Visualize a tall Pine Tree with its branches flowing gracefully and imagine breathing in its refreshing scent for a mini-meditation spiritual uplift. If you work or live near such a tree, just touching a branch for a few minutes will energize you. Yogi's are known for graceful deliberate movement and agility. The important thing is that Yoga offers us ancient knowledge to create this vibrant health anywhere we are.

Khadi's website is www.yourstrulyyogatv.vpweb.com.

Yoga Please, Hold the Wine

by Acharya Sri Khadi Madama, RYT, of TheHolisticOption.com

Last month I began an essay on the historical value of practicing traditional Yoga and keeping to it's ancient code. This month I find that I must continue in this line, as Yoga continues to be exploited by more and more trend seeking journalists and venues. I have just seen an ad requesting information for Yoga retreats that offer wine tasting parties as one of the events. I have no idea when this outrageous distortion will end. The old masters knew only too well that alcohol consumption affects the cerebral cortex of the brain, one of the main channels for the passage of the Kundalini energy. That energy that must be released from the base of the spine and which must travel through the energy impasses known as the Three Grandhi's or knots, and it must circulate through the 7 Chakras in the subtle anatomy before being able to reach the Thousand Point Gate (Thousand Petaled Lotus) at the top of the head and which is the location of the 7th Chakra. If this energy becomes tainted in anyway, this process cannot be achieved and the aspirant cannot reach enlightenment. In fact, if the energy becomes tainted, as the practitioner tries to force the process, it can cause serious problems. Enlightenment can only be achieved when the subconscious mind is clear of debris through much deep disciplinary practice, otherwise the superconscious cannot be accessed. Many people go to a Yoga class, then off to a party or dinner and have a glass or two of wine. What they don't know, because they are not being properly instructed, is that they will impede or reverse any progress toward this higher development, if that is their goal. In ancient times, the Guru would not instruct anyone who partook of alcohol or meat and in fact, certain Yoga practices even today, are withheld from students who do not abstain from these two substances because of the danger of the damaging effects being introduced into the finer nerve tissues, known as Nadis, and the subsequent damage to the student. These students would be barred from advancing to the more advanced techniques and therefore, stunted in their long range progress. This also includes smoking cigarettes. If your life is not improving all' round while you are practicing Yoga, it is because you are not engaging the 10 principles and only practicing one small portion of Yoga such as the postures only. This idea is very sad because often Yoga will be suggested to someone for their health or stress management, yet, they do not achieve the results desired because these other principles are not incorporated. Yoga works best as the total package it was designed to be by the ancient Rishis who channeled it from the masters in the higher spheres.

Now here are the substantial facts. According to a health note in Woman's Day Magazine, June 2009 issue, the findings are that drinking just one glass of wine per day can raise your risk of developing breast, liver and colon cancer by almost 13%. The health note went on to say to limit it to no more than 3 times per week. Why not just eliminate it all together? You can substitute the wine with chilled fruit herbal tea, & the beer with Chamomile/Ginger herbal tea in seltzer. If it's the buzz you're looking for, that's where meditation comes in. Grab your Yoga mat instead of the bottle. You'll live longer and feel 'Yours Truly, Yoga' better.

Khadi's website is www.yourstrulyyogatv.vpweb.com.

Two Breaths For a Hot Summer

by Acharya Sri Khadi Madama, RYT, of TheHolisticOption.com

THE THIRST QUENCHING BREATH: This breath has been used by Yogi's over the centuries to quench thirst when water was not available. It will help for short periods of time when one feels parched.

Sitting in a comfortable position with your spine relaxed but straight. Curl up your tongue as you extend it just outside of your lips, to form a kind of straw. Inhale slowly through your "straw", then retract your tongue, as you close your mouth to exhale through your nostrils. You will notice that your mouth feels very cool. Now repeat, as you continue to repeat, the inside of your mouth will become more and more cool and cool saliva will begin to form. Swallow this cool saliva so it can begin to cool you down and un parch your system. Repeat approximately 8 times.

THE COOLING BREATH: As above, sit comfortably, parting your lips slightly, and placing your upper and lower teeth together and your tongue behind your teeth right where they come together. Inhale through your mouth, which will make a kind of slurping sound. Then exhale through your nostrils with your mouth closed. You will find that the cooling effect can be felt in the mouth, throat and down into the chest. Repeat 8 times.

Both of these breaths utilize mouth breathing which is not normally practiced in Yoga. However, due to the special nature of these two "pranayams" (controlling the life-force breathing) one is actually energized in a healthy way. These two breaths are also 2 of the 8 special breathings performed by advanced Yogi's. They are simple and effective and most importantly, safe! However, if you suffer from Asthma, Allergies or any other respiratory problems, please check with your physician before attempting to learn these two breaths.

Khadi's website is www.yourstrulyyogatv.vpweb.com.

Yoga Body Maps

by Acharya Sri Khadi Madama, RYT, of TheHolisticOption.com

Even though I am The Yoga Diva on the Flying Carpet, and jutting around for guest appearances and Sports Yoga clinics, I always make time for my long time students, and each month treat them to a mini retreat which I call a Yoga Party. During this class I like to introduce something unique that our regular class doesn't allow time for, and this month I thought I'd love to share this idea with all of you 'Ask the Health Experts' blog readers.

I wish I could claim the brilliance for this idea, but I cannot. I learned it more than 35 years ago from a brilliant behavior consultant during a Yoga retreat I was conducting, and later, saw that yet another inspired Yoga instructor was offering it at the Omega Institute. I've taught this over the years at various venues and each time, I seem to be able to uncover something that I hadn't thought of before. So, with no further ado, get out a piece of paper big enough to draw the outline of your body, find some markers and let's do a Yoga Body Map. The thing about a body map is that it relates perfectly to a Yoga setting in that once you're finished playing with it, you can set about to do the Yoga poses that will help to recover, relieve, strengthen, release whatever it is that the Yoga Body Map reveals. Here's how you do it:

1. Draw an outline of your body with the color of choice.
2. Identify any areas of your body that have been injured either physically or emotionally.
3. Identify areas of your body that you are just plain not happy with.
4. Any surgeries?
5. What parts of your body are just fine?

Now choose some colors and indicate all of those areas on the map. Use it as a meditation: think about healing those areas by re-coloring over them with a different healing color such as blue. Have fun with it! I drew a happy orange slice where my neck used to hurt because I love the happy look of orange slices...and 'orange you' just happy you can color over things too? The body map will reveal all of the joys of living in your body and it will help you in a lighthearted way identify where you are having some problems. By breaking the cycle of serious suffering, you can shake the negative energy and feel for these glorious fun moments that you have control over that last 5 pounds, the headaches (please don't draw an axe on your head!) and other aches, pains and illnesses as you color them away, draw sacred symbols on them. Have a broken heart? Color it blue and healed. The important thing is to have fun, even when dealing with sensitive areas. In this way, you get to move past them in ways you didn't think you could. Don't forget to dot yourself by putting the dot of enlightenment on your third eye to finish your masterpiece. Later, you can give it a great big send off in your outdoor chiminia with a few cones of favorite incense. You will be amazed at what the Yoga Map will reveal and release.

Khadi's website is www.yourstrulyyogatv.vpweb.com.

What's For Breakfast?

by Donielle Wilson, ND, of TheHolisticOption.com

Breakfast is the key to starting your day feeling both healthy and energetic. Whether you are focused on balancing your blood sugar, lowering cholesterol, losing weight, avoiding gluten and dairy, fighting off yeast or improving your mood and focus, the breakfast recommendations are basically the same! This may come as a surprise, but these three simple concepts really do control all of the above:

1. Make sure to include protein.
2. Minimize carbohydrates.
3. Include healthy fat and fiber if possible.

Ok, with those three points in mind, let's build a breakfast for you. I would like to encourage you to think outside the breakfast box! Forget about cereals, pancakes, waffles and the like. They are simply too high in carbohydrates, have a high glycemic index and, furthermore, tend to contain gluten (an all too common grain that many people can't eat).

Set aside American breakfast concepts, and those advertised on TV and start thinking of breakfast in a whole new way. How about wild salmon for breakfast? (that is one of my favorites) Or left over chicken and roasted vegetables.

Here are my favorite breakfast choices:

1. Protein shake (Metagenics Sustain or Thorne Mediclear Plus) with flax seed oil, ground flax seeds and ProBerry
2. Turkey Bacon (hormone and antibiotic free)
3. Frozen turkey sausage (hormone and antibiotic free)
4. Wild Salmon, sauteed with onions
5. Turkey Bologna (hormone and antibiotic free)
6. Whole, Organic egg (if you are not intolerant to eggs) poached or sauteed with arugula and goat cheese

How much you ask? My recommendation is to eat half. Eat half as much as you think you need or half as much as you usually have. What is the worst possibility? You might feel hungry in an hour or two? Great, then eat a second breakfast.

It is better to spread out the calories and eat every 3 to 4 hours throughout the day, so for those of you like me, who love breakfast, I don't think it will take much convincing to switch to breakfast twice! That is right, eat half, and eat the other half (or something else) in a couple hours.

To drink? Stay away from juices. They are basically sugar, adding to your carbohydrate load and making a tasty breakfast for yeast, encouraging them to stay instead of go away. A much healthier option is green tea. It was my habit in those days, on the first night of class, to ask students to write an anonymous note as to why they were in the class and what they hoped to achieve during our 10 weeks. It was also my habit to tell them that at no time during the 10 weeks were they to use phrases like "I'm getting old", I'm sick and tired" or "I'm dying to __________" (whatever their statement was). I told them that in Yoga, we cannot use these phrases if we want to train the mind and the body to be well. When the students returned the next week, they handed me their folded anonymous notes which I read when I returned home that evening. One was a long letter from a lady telling me that she had inoperable brain cancer and had been given 6 months to live. She had taken up my class because she felt it would help her to relax and be soothing to her, but when she heard my words on that first evening to get the word "dying" out of her mind and experience, she told me that she decided that she would follow what I said by changing everything she said to "I'm living to go to the movies", "I'm living to see my sister next week", etc. I did not know who this student was and I taught maybe one or two more semesters, having some of the students return subsequently, before ending my time at the school. I had taken a particular liking to a small handful of the students and had wondered to where some of them had gone. It was not much time after then, that I was asked to host my TV show, Yours Truly, Yoga, and once again agreed to teach publicly due to viewers writing in to ask where they could take classes with me. During that time, I had also been asked to be a special guest, appearing for Clinique at an event at our local Mall. Even The Amazing Kreskin was there and he WAS pretty amazing and also very friendly. One of the former regular students from the local school came into my mind and I wondered where she had been during these last years. A moment later, I turned around and was amazed to find her at the counter opposite me. We both were surprised and she came up to hug me. When she did, she whispered in my ear "I'm the one who had the brain cancer and it's 8 years later, here I am, it's in remission. I believed so strongly in what you said and I lived it every day. Thank you." I saw her again a couple of years after that at a craft store, still happy, still well. I tell her story in every workshop and at every speaking engagement because it's true and people need to hear it. She believed so deeply that if she changed her mind to focusing only on living, in thought, word and action, that she would live, and she did.

Yoga teaches us to keep our minds clear and focused. On a deeper level it teaches us that if we learn the true art of concentration, Dharana, we can then truly fund the energy needed to bring about great change in our lives for the better, by funneling our energy in beneficial directions. What we allow ourselves to hear, think, say and see has such a deep impact on our wellness that it behooves us to live as the Yogi's did, in those ancient, more simpler times by keeping our thoughts and words sweet and pure and to focus on being well first within our spiritual core, which radiates pure healing energy to our minds and bodies. Strive today to be protective about what you allow yourself to see in the media; keep the company of positive people; don't focus on minor discomforts by speaking of health and well-being. Watch happy movies, read uplifting books....and most of all, fill your life with Divine Love.

Khadi's website is www.yourstrulyyogatv.vpweb.com.

Importance of Raw Food For Dogs

by Kim Bloomer, VND and Jeannie Thomason, VND, of TheHolisticOption.com

Question from TheHolisticOption.com community member: I have an 11 year old, male, English Short-Haired Pointer mix who suddenly presented with the following symptoms a few days ago: Won't eat usual amount or anything at certain meals, drinking a lot more water than usual and urinating more because of it; tremors, shaking, trembling; muscle fatigue/weakness; has had loose stool; generally unmotivated, lethargic, which is not typical of his personality. My conventional vet has diagnosed this as Addison's Disease. What do you suggest may be the cause... and what can be done about it, naturally? - S.C.

Dr. Jeannie and I are both in agreement on this... This dog needs to be switched to a raw diet. Processed food is a major part of the problem. Her veterinarian will not agree due to the training they receive in pet nutrition , which amounts to training by the pet food industry. Bottom line, dogs are opportunistic scavenger carnivores. We've both seen these types of illnesses resolved just by switching the diet to a natural diet which is a raw diet such as they'd eat in the wild. Again, her veterinarian will disagree, so the choice will ultimately be hers.

This dog's owner can learn much by visiting these sites. Editor's Note: Some of the images seen on the websites below may be disturbing to some viewers.

www.rawmeatybones.com
www.rawfeddogs.net
www.rawlearning.com
www.rawfed.com

Another factor is vaccination. Stopping the annual vaccines is key since this will only contribute to the decline in the dog's health. If the has dog been vaccinated recently, it could be an adverse effect thereof.

"Homeopathic veterinarians and other holistic practitioners have maintained for some time that vaccinations do more harm than they provide benefits. Vaccinations represent a major assault on the body's immune system.... Vaccine induced chronic diseases range from life-threatening conditions such as auto-immune crises to conditions destroying the quality of life of an animal as in chronic skin allergies." - Charles E. Loops, DVM

We wholeheartedly concur! And we hope this dog gets a chance to become all that he can be with proper nutritional support through a species appropriate raw diet and eliminating the toxins of processed food and any other toxins such as vaccines, pesticide pest control and whatever else that allopathic medicine overloads our pets' immune systems with. The naturopathic approach that include fresh air, sunshine, pure water and a species appropriate RAW diet can help animals AND humans alike heal. If we honor the eight laws of health, then we and our animals can and will be well.

Dr. Kim Bloomer's website is www.aspenbloompetcare.com. This is particularly true when we consider that many of our common-day chronic ailments begin in the digestive system. It is also true when we consider the sheer number of people that suffer from poor gastrointestinal health, a condition which lowers the overall level of good bacteria in the body.

Before we go into the multi-fold benefits of taking probiotics, let’s define what probiotics are. The Joint FAO/WHO Working Group defines probiotics as "live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host."

In plain English, probiotics are a type of living bacteria that actually benefit your health when taken in the appropriate amounts. This friendly bacteria, located in the gastrointestinal tract, comes in a variety of forms. With more than 400 different bacteria living in the human gastrointestinal tract, the most common forms of intestinal probiotics are L. acidophilus and Bifidobacteria bifidum.

These bacteria act as balancing agents for non-friendly, pathogenic, gut-bacteria such as Candida or E. coli. When the “good-guys” are not present enough, a number of bacteria-related health problems such as digestive upset, headaches, sluggishness, irritability, cadidiasis (an overgrowth of the bacteria Candida albicans), and even anxiety can ensue.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is, quite possibly, the strongest of our probiotic fighters. Studies show that L. acidophilus actually creates a natural form of antibiotics in the body. This natural antibiotic increases our ability to produce antimicrobial action against the pathogens in the food we eat, the air we breath, and the things we come in contact with. Stress, unhealthy lifestyles, and most importantly, unhealthy acidic diets, destroy our natural amounts of probiotics. In this sense, it is a great idea to add a probiotic supplement to your diet.

The following health benefits are associated with the intake of daily doses of probiotics.

- Enhanced immune system response
- Reduces negative affects of taking many types of antibiotics
- Aids in preventing and treating colon inflammation following surgery
- Helps to prevent eczema in youth
- Increased ability to digest food
- Therapeutic for viral respiratory tract infections by enhancing the overall immune system
- Reduces lactose intolerance
- Reduces incidence of yeast infection, vaginitis and candidiasis
- Increases ability to assimilate the nutrients from food
- Alleviates many common digestive disorders such as constipation, diarrhea and IBS
- Acts as a treatment for halitosis (bad breath)
- Increases ability to synthesize vitamin B
- Increases ability to absorb calcium
- Promotes anti-tumor and anti-cancer activity in the body

Dr. Group's website is www.ghchealth.com.

Yoga: Harnessing Everything Together

by Acharya Sri Khadi Madama, RYT, of TheHolisticOption.com

I'm so honored and excited to be able to have communication with others through our own Ask the Experts blog here at TheHolisticOption.com.

I've written extensively over the years in my own newsletters and other publications about how to manage stress, wellness and of course, Yoga and meditation. There is even a Yoga of writing! As in traditional Yoga practice the student always kept a "Kitab" or "Sadhana" journal. So, I hope that you will start one too, if you don't already have one. I hope to chock this blog with lots of tips gleaned over 40 years.

We could say there's a Yoga of Everything, because the very word Yoga refers to "harnessing together" or "the Yoke that holds together". Whether it is a team of beautiful, gentle oxen that are often seen along the roadways and paths in India or whether it is a an athletic team, organization or work staff, the common Yoke that holds them together beyond the immediate goal, is their ability to concentrate and work together in meaningful and synergistic ways or the dynamo of success comes to a halt! Wherever you are right now, looking for ways to be a better part of this Yoke will not only improve your work environment, but your health as well. In order for Yoga practice to be able to fit into the new paradigm, we have to be able to apply it's principles beyond the asanas and even beyond our own meditation. If we cannot apply the laws of flexibility of the body and mind to our work or our families, we are not completely understanding the meaning of Yoga. If one oxen should get away, the team is weakened and so it is with our minds if we are not using the extant philosophy of Yoga to improve every aspect of our daily living.

My teacher always taught that it was not necessary to look like a Yogi, but to act as one so that in blending in harmoniously everywhere, others would learn by example of my conduct and the vibrational quality of my presence. At work, take a couple of minutes each day. Make a commitment to begin each day by sitting, eyes closed, and focus on gratitude for the smallest things such as, safe arrival at work, the water cooler working, the blue sky, not waking with a headache (even if you did!). Just practice gratefulness for 2 1/2 minutes every day working up to 24 minutes. You will see your entire world begin to change day by day, because your vantage point will be from a higher place. I call this Time Tithing®.

"Remember to think lovely thoughts and keep smiling".

Khadi's website is www.yourstrulyyogatv.vpweb.com.

Sexual Vitality and Fertility Through Food

by Andrea Beaman, HHC, AADP, of TheHolisticOption.com

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) “jing” is the source of life, longevity and vitality (including sexual vitality!). Jing is the deep essence we are born with, and is passed down from our parents to us and stored in our kidneys. Abusing the kidneys with a toxic lifestyle can drain our life essence, create a deficiency of jing, resulting in impotence, reproductive disorders, and other illnesses. We cannot replace congenital jing (bummer), but we can enhance “acquired jing” by improving our food and lifestyle. Yeah baby!

Toxic substances in the food and environment can deplete the jing. This includes Genetically Modified (GM) foods and pesticides that have been linked with lowered libido, diminished sperm count, abnormal and dead sperm, increased sterility, miscarriage, reduced egg production, and birth defects. There are GM seeds on the market called “Terminator Seeds” that are sterile. Yikes! Foods with no reproductive capacity have a similar energetic effect inside the body. Organically grown and Certified Naturally Grown food prohibits the use of GM seeds. Other factors that can exhaust the kidneys, weaken the sex drive, and diminish jing include excessive use of stimulants, coffee (caffeine), alcohol, drugs, stress, fear, overwork, cold foods (cold breakfast cereal with cold milk, too many raw salads, iced foods and drinks) and excess sugar and refined carbohydrates.

Traditional foods that can enhance acquired jing and increase vitality include fish, beans/legumes, liver and kidney (organ meats), bone marrow, and cereal grasses (whole grains). When the physical body grows excited blood rushes to the sex organs. If there is a “blood deficiency” the desire for sex may be strong, but the body may be weak and unable to perform. Essential to strengthening and building blood are red meats, bone marrow, liver, fish and seafood, chicken and eggs.

On the other hand, if the blood is stagnant or congested (thick and waxy from too much fat and animal products), there may also be corresponding trouble with the sex organs. Sludgy blood makes for sluggish sex drive. Essential to purifying, tonifying and moving the blood are vegetables like garlic, onions, leeks, dark leafy greens (spinach, kale, collard greens, dandelion leaf), burdock root, beets, and sea vegetables. We have to be able to find the right balance between foods from the vegetable and animal kingdoms to enhance fertility and sexual vitality.

George Ohsawa (a pioneer in Macrobiotics) said, “A good appetite for food and sex is health itself. Sexual appetite and joyful satisfaction are an essential condition of happiness.” C’mon... it’s time to get into the kitchen and get your groove on!
